Jakarta to Sumba: flights via Bali, Kupang or Surabaya, and how long it takes
There is no non-stop flight from Jakarta to Sumba, but one well-timed connection gets you from the capital's traffic to the quiet savanna of Sumba in a single day.
There are no direct flights from Jakarta to Sumba, so you connect once: most travellers fly Jakarta to Bali (about 2 hours) and then Bali to Tambolaka (TMC, about 1 hour 30 minutes), while Kupang and Surabaya are useful alternatives. With a good connection the trip takes roughly 5-8 hours airport to airport; book Tambolaka for West and Southwest Sumba and Waingapu (WGP) for East Sumba, and check the airline before booking because schedules change.

You leave Jakarta in the grey haze of the morning rush, with ten million people and their motorbikes below you. By mid-afternoon the propellers of a small plane are slowing over a coast of pale limestone and golden grass, and the air that hits you on the steps at Tambolaka smells of dry earth and the sea. Sumba is only one connection away from the capital, and the whole trip fits into a single day if you plan the second flight well.
The quick answer: there is no non-stop flight from Jakarta to Sumba. You fly Jakarta to Bali (Denpasar, DPS) and change there for Tambolaka (TMC) or Waingapu (WGP), or connect via Kupang (KOE) or Surabaya (SUB). Airport to airport, a smooth connection takes roughly 5-8 hours. Schedules change often in eastern Indonesia, so always check the airline before booking.
Which airport: Tambolaka (TMC) or Waingapu (WGP)?
Sumba has two airports about 200 km apart, and choosing the right one saves you a long drive.

It is the busier airport: Wikipedia, citing Indonesian civil aviation data, counts 165,416 passengers in 2024 and a 2,300 m runway. Fly here for the western beaches and lagoons, the traditional villages of the west and the Pasola areas.
- Waingapu (WGP), Umbu Mehang Kunda Airport, is about 4 km from the town of Waingapu in East Sumba. It is smaller (58,819 passengers in 2024, a 1,950 m runway) and serves the savanna hills, the east coast and the weaving villages around the town.
Many travellers fly into one airport and out of the other so they cross the island only once. Our guide to getting around Sumba explains drivers, roads and distances.

Via Bali: the easiest connection
Bali is the natural hub. Jakarta to Denpasar is one of the busiest routes in the country, so you can pick a morning flight that lands well before the Sumba departures. In a schedule published by Bali.live in 2024, Wings Air left Bali for Tambolaka at 10:35, 14:15 and 15:20, each flight taking roughly 85-90 minutes. Times move from season to season, but the pattern of late-morning and afternoon departures has been stable, which means a Jakarta flight leaving around 06:00-09:00 usually connects the same day.
For East Sumba, TransNusa's non-stop Bali to Waingapu service runs four times a week. On other days, fly into Tambolaka and drive east (allow most of a day), or route through Kupang. Everything about the Bali leg, including the airport transfer and fares, is in our guide on how to get to Sumba from Bali.
Total time via Bali: roughly 5-8 hours airport to airport, including a layover of 1.5-3 hours.
Via Kupang: best for Waingapu and East Sumba
Kupang, the capital of East Nusa Tenggara on Timor, is the province's main hub and has flights to both Sumba airports. Jakarta to Kupang takes about 3 hours. From Kupang, Wings Air flies daily to Waingapu in about 1 hour 15 minutes, with an afternoon departure, and Nam Air and Wings Air together fly about ten times a week to Tambolaka. This route is longer than going via Bali, roughly 6-9 hours airport to airport, but it is useful on days when there is no Bali to Waingapu flight, or when you also want to see Timor. Read our guide Kupang to Sumba for the details, including Pelni ships.
Via Surabaya: a quieter alternative
Nam Air flies Surabaya to Tambolaka about three times a week in roughly 1 hour 30 minutes, according to FlightConnections. Combined with one of the roughly 30 daily Jakarta to Surabaya flights, it can work well, especially if Bali flights are full in high season. The catch is the low frequency: if your Jakarta flight is late, the next Surabaya to Tambolaka departure may be days away. See our guide Surabaya to Sumba.
Typical fares in 2025-2026
- Jakarta to Bali: in December 2025, Metro TV (quoting Traveloka) listed one-way economy fares from around IDR 850,000 on low-cost carriers to around IDR 1.8 million on Garuda Indonesia (about USD 47-100).
- Bali to Tambolaka: one-way direct fares were around IDR 1.2-1.4 million (about USD 65-80) for November 2026; promotional fares have started lower. Our guide to Sumba travel costs puts the whole trip in context.
Fares rise sharply around Christmas, New Year, Eid and the Indonesian school holidays (late June to mid-July). Book early for those dates.
Tips for a smooth trip
- Buy one ticket if you can. If both flights are on the same booking (for example within the Lion Air group, which includes Lion Air, Batik Air and Wings Air), the airline is responsible if you miss the connection. On separate tickets, you are on your own.
- Leave a buffer. On separate tickets allow at least 3 hours in Bali, or stay a night there. Domestic delays are common, and missing the last Sumba flight of the day means a night in Bali anyway.
- Watch your baggage. Smaller turboprops to Sumba have tight limits. Cabin bags are usually limited to 7 kg, and some low-cost fares (Wings Air in particular) include no free checked bag, so prepay online: it is cheaper than paying at the airport. Pack soft bags and keep valuables with you.
- Choose your day. If you want Waingapu, plan around the TransNusa days from Bali (Tue, Wed, Fri, Sat) or the daily Kupang flight. Morning flights out of Jakarta give you the most options.
- Arrange your driver in advance. Neither airport has much public transport. Tambolaka is in the far west, so West Sumba is close but East Sumba is a full day's drive away.
