Surabaya to Sumba: the direct Nam Air flight, Bali connections and Pelni ships

Surabaya is one of the few cities outside Nusa Tenggara with a non-stop flight to Sumba, and when it does not fit your dates, Bali is just an hour away.

By The Sumba Times deskPublished 4 min read
Quick answer

From Surabaya you can fly direct to Tambolaka (TMC) with Nam Air in about 1 hour 30 minutes, about three times a week according to flight databases. On other days, fly Surabaya to Bali (about 1 hour, more than 100 flights a week) and connect to Tambolaka or Waingapu (WGP), roughly 3.5-6 hours in total. Pelni ships also link Surabaya with Waingapu on multi-day routes. Schedules change, so check the airline before booking.

Surabaya is all heat, traffic and energy: street stalls frying rawon and rujak, a port full of cranes and ships, and an airport that never seems to sleep. Ninety minutes later you can be stepping out into the quiet of Tambolaka, where the loudest sounds are the wind and the crickets, and the road from the airport passes stone tombs and fields of corn. Surabaya is one of the few big Indonesian cities with a direct link to Sumba, which makes it a smart gateway for travellers from Java.

The quick answer: Nam Air flies Surabaya (Juanda, SUB) to Tambolaka (TMC) non-stop in about 1 hour 30 minutes, around three times a week. If that flight does not suit you, go via Bali: Surabaya to Denpasar is about an hour, with many daily flights, and Bali has several daily flights to Sumba. Schedules change, so check the airline before booking.

The direct flight: Nam Air to Tambolaka

Nam Air, part of the Sriwijaya Air group, is the only airline flying Surabaya to Tambolaka non-stop, according to both FlightConnections and Skyscanner. The flight takes about 1 hour 30 minutes and covers about 744 km. FlightConnections lists it three times a week on a Boeing 737-500, a jet rather than the turboprops that serve most Sumba routes. The return flight from Tambolaka leaves in the morning (listed between about 09:45 and 10:50 depending on the date).

Tambolaka lands you in Southwest Sumba, close to the lagoons, the western beaches and the traditional villages of the west. If your trip is in East Sumba, you will need to drive across the island, which takes most of a day: see getting around Sumba.

Via Bali: more choice, more flexibility

When the direct flight is full or not running on your day, Bali is the easy alternative. FlightConnections counts around 117 non-stop flights a week between Surabaya and Denpasar, with a flight time of about an hour. Take a morning flight from Surabaya and connect in Bali to an afternoon flight to Tambolaka, or to the TransNusa non-stop flight to Waingapu on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Everything about the Bali leg is in our guide on how to get to Sumba from Bali.

Total time via Bali: roughly 3.5-6 hours airport to airport, including a layover of 1.5-3 hours.

You can also connect in Kupang, which has daily flights to Waingapu and about ten a week to Tambolaka; this is useful mainly if you are combining Sumba with Timor. See Kupang to Sumba.

By sea: Pelni from Surabaya

Pelni's long-distance ships link Surabaya with Sumba. In July 2026 its schedule from Kupang listed KM Awu, roughly every two weeks, on a loop through Ende, Waingapu, Bima, Benoa and Surabaya, and KM Lawit on a loop through Ende, Waingapu, Bima, Benoa and Surabaya. Sailing from Surabaya, these ships stop at Benoa in Bali and at Bima on Sumbawa before reaching Waingapu, so expect more than a day on board. Pelni says its schedules are tentative and can change with weather or operations. Check dates and direction on pelni.co.id or in the PELNI Mobile app, and arrange a pick-up at Waingapu because ships can arrive at night.

Typical fares in 2026

  • Surabaya to Tambolaka: Skyscanner showed return fares from around EUR 214 (about IDR 4.3 million) and one-way fares from around EUR 113 (about IDR 2.3 million) for December 2026 and February 2027. Those cheapest fares were connecting itineraries; the direct Nam Air flight may cost more.
  • Bali to Tambolaka: one-way direct fares were around IDR 1.2-1.4 million (about USD 65-80) for November 2026.

Fares rise at Christmas and New Year, at Eid and in the Indonesian school holidays. For a full budget for your time on the island, read Sumba travel costs.

Practical tips

  • Check the baggage rules for each leg. Rules differ by airline and fare. Cabin bags are usually limited to 7 kg. On the Bali to Sumba leg, Wings Air turboprops are strict and many fares include no free checked bag, so prepay online.
  • Book the direct flight first. With only a few flights a week, it fills up in high season (July and August, and the Christmas holidays). If it is full, switch to Bali.
  • Leave a buffer. On separate tickets via Bali allow at least 3 hours, or spend a night in Bali. Missing the last Sumba flight of the day is the most common problem.
  • Plan your return day. The direct flight back to Surabaya leaves Tambolaka in the morning, so stay near the airport the night before rather than in East Sumba.
  • Arrange transport in advance. There is very little public transport at Tambolaka airport. Book a driver or ask your accommodation to pick you up.
