How to get to Sumba from Bali: flights, airports and the route that works best

Two airports, short flights and one simple rule: arrive at one end of the island and leave from the other.

Sumba sits south-east of Bali and has no direct international flights. Almost everyone arrives by a short domestic flight from Bali (Denpasar, DPS).

The two airports

  • Tambolaka (TMC), in the north-west. The main gateway for West and Southwest Sumba: Kodi, Lamboya, Wanokaka, the traditional villages and the Pasola fields.
  • Waingapu (WGP), in the east. Closest to the savannas, Wairinding hill, Walakiri beach and Tanggedu waterfall.

Flights from Bali

  • Bali-Tambolaka: Wings Air has flown several daily flights, about 1 h 30 each way.
  • Bali-Waingapu: TransNusa has flown non-stop four times a week since 15 July 2026 (Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday).

Schedules on small regional routes change often. Always check the airline before booking.

The route that works best

Sumba is about 200 km long and roughly twice the size of Bali. Roads are slow. The easiest plan is to fly into Tambolaka and out of Waingapu, or the other way round, and cross the island by car.

Practical tips

  • Small planes mean small baggage allowances. Check yours before you pack.
  • Rent a car with a local driver. Signs are few and a driver knows the villages, the customs and the road conditions.
  • Carry cash. Outside the towns, card payments and ATMs are rare.
  • The dry season (roughly May to September) makes roads and waterfalls easier. In the rainy season (roughly November to March) some routes get hard.
