Kupang to Sumba: flights to Waingapu and Tambolaka, and the Pelni ships

From Timor, Sumba is just over an hour away by turboprop, or a long, slow night at sea on a Pelni ship that stops at Ende on Flores along the way.

Quick answer

Kupang wakes early. Bemos with booming speakers race along the seafront, the harbour smells of diesel and grilled fish, and the hills of Timor turn from brown to gold in the first light. Across the Savu Sea to the west lies Sumba, close enough for a short flight, far enough to feel like another world: wide savanna, clan villages with towering roofs and very few other travellers.

The quick answer: fly. Kupang (El Tari Airport, KOE) has direct flights to both Sumba airports: about 1 hour 15 minutes to Waingapu (WGP) in the east and about 1 hour to 1 hour 35 minutes to Tambolaka (TMC) in the west. If you have time and want the slow way, Pelni passenger ships sail from Kupang to Waingapu a few times a month. Schedules change, so check the airline or Pelni before booking.

  • Kupang to Waingapu (East Sumba). Wings Air flies once a day with an ATR 72 turboprop, according to AirportOverview, leaving Kupang in the afternoon (listed at 15:15, arriving 16:30). The return flight to Kupang leaves Waingapu early in the morning. Wikipedia also lists Wings Air on this route.
  • Kupang to Tambolaka (West and Southwest Sumba). FlightsFrom lists about ten flights a week: Nam Air once a day (an afternoon departure, listed at 15:00) and Wings Air on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays (a late-morning departure, listed at 11:10).

Which one should you take? If your plans are in East Sumba (the savanna hills, the east coast beaches, the weaving villages near Waingapu), fly to Waingapu. If you are heading to the western beaches, lagoons and the traditional villages of the west, fly to Tambolaka. The two airports are about 200 km apart, and the drive between them takes most of a day: our guide to getting around Sumba explains the roads.

By sea: Pelni ships from Tenau

Pelni, the state passenger shipping line, runs long loop routes through eastern Indonesia, and several of them link Kupang with Waingapu. Its July 2026 schedule for Tenau port, published by Metro TV, listed:

  • KM Awu on 3, 17 and 31 July (17:00), roughly every two weeks, on a loop through Ende, Waingapu, Bima, Benoa (Bali) and Surabaya.
  • KM Wilis on 9 and 23 July (14:00), through Ende, Waingapu, Waikelo (near Tambolaka), Bima, Labuan Bajo and Makassar.
  • KM Lawit on 28 July (04:00), through Lewoleba, Ende, Waingapu, Bima, Benoa and Surabaya.
  • KM Sabuk Nusantara 90, a smaller pioneer ship, on 6, 16 and 26 July (21:00), on a slow route via Sabu, Raijua and Ende that ends at Waingapu.

Rome2rio puts the Kupang to Waingapu sailing at around 16 hours, with fares of roughly USD 13-22 (around IDR 240,000-400,000) in economy. Pelni says its schedules are tentative and change with the weather and operations, so treat these as a pattern, not a promise. Tickets are sold at the Pelni office in Kupang, on pelni.co.id and in the PELNI Mobile app.

What about ASDP ferries? ASDP Indonesia Ferry has run a car ferry from Bolok port in Kupang via Aimere on Flores to Waingapu. Antara reported in 2019 that it sailed twice a week (Mondays and Thursdays at 08:00). We could not confirm a current 2026 timetable, so ask ASDP or at Bolok port before planning around it. Crossings in the Savu Sea are often cancelled when waves are high, especially in the rainy season (roughly December to March).

Total time and fares

  • By air: about 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 35 minutes in the air, or roughly 3-4 hours from leaving your Kupang accommodation to reaching your Sumba accommodation if it is near the airport.
  • Air fares: Rome2rio listed one-way fares from Kupang to Tambolaka from around USD 65 and to Waingapu from around USD 80, with peak fares up to around USD 245-275 (roughly IDR 1.2-5 million) in 2026. Prices rise in the holidays.
  • By sea: plan for a full day and night on board, plus waiting time, as ships often run late.

Practical tips

  • Baggage on small planes. Wings Air flies ATR turboprops with a 7 kg cabin limit (40 x 30 x 20 cm) and, on many fares, no free checked bag. Prepay checked baggage online, which is cheaper than paying at the counter, and use soft bags that fit small holds. Check what your fare includes on Nam Air too.
  • Leave a buffer. If you are flying into Kupang from Jakarta or Bali on a separate ticket, do not plan the Sumba flight for the same afternoon unless you have at least 3 hours. Better still, spend a night in Kupang.
  • Pick the right day. The Wings Air flights to Tambolaka run only on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays; on other days Nam Air is the only direct option. Waingapu has a flight every day.
  • Ships run late. Pelni arrivals at Waingapu can be at night. Arrange a pick-up in advance and keep your phone charged. Bring water, snacks, a sarong or light blanket and earplugs for an economy deck.
  • Combine with Flores. Since the ships call at Ende, you can stop on Flores and continue to Sumba later, or use the daily flights from Kupang for one leg and the ship for the other.
