Labuan Bajo to Sumba: flights to Tambolaka, ferries and combining Komodo with Sumba

Komodo's dragons and Sumba's clan villages are less than an hour apart by air, which makes them one of the most rewarding pairings in eastern Indonesia, if you get the timing right.

Quick answer

The quickest way from Labuan Bajo to Sumba is the Wings Air flight to Tambolaka (TMC), about 50 minutes, listed about three times a week and seasonal (November to March in flight databases). Otherwise fly Labuan Bajo to Bali (about 1 hour 10 minutes, many daily flights) and on to Tambolaka the same day. By sea there is no direct ferry: you can cross Labuan Bajo to Sape on Sumbawa (about 6.5 hours) and then Sape to Waikelo, reopened in May 2026 with no published timetable, so check the airline or ASDP before booking.

Tambolaka (TMC) for West and Southwest Sumba

In the morning you are on a wooden boat in Komodo National Park, watching pink sand and a dragon's slow, heavy walk along the shore. By late afternoon you can be landing on Sumba, where the hills are covered in savanna, horses graze beside the road and the roofs of the traditional houses rise like tall hats above the trees. Labuan Bajo and Sumba sit next to each other on the map, and the short hop between them is one of the best ways to see two very different sides of East Nusa Tenggara in one trip.

The quick answer: fly. Wings Air has operated a direct Labuan Bajo (LBJ) to Tambolaka (TMC) flight of about 50 minutes, listed around three times a week and marked as seasonal. When it is not running, the reliable alternative is to fly back to Bali and connect to Tambolaka the same day. The sea route via Sumbawa exists but is slow and irregular. Schedules change, so check the airline before booking.

The direct flight to Tambolaka

FlightConnections lists Wings Air as the only airline flying Labuan Bajo to Tambolaka non-stop, with flight IW 1916 leaving in the afternoon (listed at 16:05, arriving 16:55) on an ATR 42 or ATR 72 turboprop. The distance is only about 124 km. The same database shows the route as seasonal, from November to March, with about 13 flights a month on Tambolaka's departure board. That means the most convenient connection may not exist in the dry season, exactly when most people travel. Look it up for your dates first, and if it is not on sale, use the Bali connection.

Tambolaka is the right airport for West and Southwest Sumba: the lagoons, the western beaches, the traditional villages of the west and the Pasola areas. For East Sumba you will either drive across the island (most of a day; see getting around Sumba) or look at the small Susi Air service to Waingapu that Wikipedia lists. Small Susi Air aircraft carry few passengers and have strict weight limits, so ask the airline directly.

Via Bali: the reliable backup

Labuan Bajo to Bali is a busy route, about 1 hour 10 minutes with roughly 35 non-stop flights a week according to FlightConnections. Kiwi.com showed one-way fares from around USD 45-55 for November 2026. In Bali you connect to one of the daily flights to Tambolaka, or to TransNusa's non-stop flight to Waingapu, which runs four times a week (Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday). Take a morning flight out of Labuan Bajo so that you reach Denpasar before the early-afternoon Sumba departures. Our guide on how to get to Sumba from Bali covers that leg in detail.

Total time via Bali: roughly 4-7 hours airport to airport, including the layover.

By sea: Labuan Bajo, Sape and Waikelo

There is no direct ferry from Labuan Bajo to Sumba. The overland and sea route goes west to Sumbawa first:

  1. Labuan Bajo to Sape. ASDP ferries cross the Sape Strait to the port of Sape in Bima, on the eastern tip of Sumbawa. A traveller on the KMP Cakalang in April 2024 left at 10:30 and arrived at 17:00, about 6.5 hours. Departure times vary by day, and crossings can be cancelled when waves are high.
  2. Sape to Waikelo. The ferry between Sape and Waikelo port, near Tambolaka, reopened on 24 May 2026 with a ceremony by ASDP and the Southwest Sumba government; the regency named the ship as KMP Cakalang. No timetable or crossing time was announced, so ask ASDP's Sape branch or at Waikelo port before you rely on it.

Because the same ship has been linked to both crossings, departures may not be daily. Allow at least two to three days for this route and expect to sleep in Sape or Bima.

Pelni: the state passenger line's KM Wilis has run a loop that calls at Labuan Bajo, Bima, Waikelo and Waingapu. In July 2026 it called roughly every two weeks, according to Pelni's Kupang schedule. Check pelni.co.id or the PELNI Mobile app for the current dates and direction of travel.

How to combine Komodo and Sumba

  • Komodo first, Sumba second. Do your boat trip from Labuan Bajo (a day trip or a liveaboard of 2-3 days), then fly to Tambolaka. You finish your trip in quieter Sumba and fly home via Bali.
  • Use two airports. Enter Sumba at Tambolaka, cross the island by car, and leave from Waingapu on the TransNusa flight to Bali or the daily Wings Air flight to Kupang.
  • Build in a spare day. Boat trips sometimes return late, and the direct flight runs only a few times a week. Do not book a flight on the same afternoon a liveaboard ends.
  • Plan the season. The dry season (roughly May to September) is the best time for both Komodo and Sumba, but the direct flight is listed for November to March, so in the dry season you will probably connect via Bali.

Practical tips

  • Small-plane baggage. Wings Air ATR flights limit cabin bags to 7 kg (40 x 30 x 20 cm), and many fares include no free checked bag. Prepay online, pack light and use soft bags; dive gear can push you over the limit.
  • Diving and flying. Divers need a no-fly interval after their last dive. Ask your dive operator and plan the Sumba flight accordingly.
  • Cash. ATMs are limited outside Tambolaka, Waikabubak and Waingapu. Bring cash; our guide to Sumba travel costs explains how much.
