Europe to Sumba: flights via Doha, Dubai, Istanbul or Singapore, and how long it takes

Getting from Europe to Sumba takes one long-haul flight to Bali and one short hop, and with the right stopover the journey becomes part of the adventure.

By The Sumba Times deskPublished 5 min read
Quick answer

There are no direct flights from Europe to Sumba. You fly to Bali (Denpasar, DPS) with one stop, usually in Doha, Dubai, Istanbul or Singapore, which takes roughly 16-18 hours from London, and then take a 1 hour 30 minute domestic flight to Tambolaka (TMC) or Waingapu (WGP). Most travellers spend a night in Bali, so plan on about 1.5-2 days door to door, and check the airline before booking because schedules change.

Somewhere over the Indian Ocean, after a night of films and broken sleep, the window shade lifts on a sky turning orange. A few hours later you are in the warm, frangipani-scented air of Bali, and the next day a small plane carries you east over the Lesser Sunda Islands until the green of Bali gives way to Sumba's dry, golden hills, its lonely beaches and its villages of high-roofed houses. From Europe, Sumba is far, but it is not complicated: one long-haul flight with a stop, one short domestic flight.

The quick answer: fly from Europe to Bali (DPS) with one connection, then take a domestic flight of about 1 hour 30 minutes to Tambolaka (TMC) in the west or Waingapu (WGP) in the east. The long-haul part takes roughly 16-18 hours from London with a single stop. Because most long-haul flights land in Bali in the evening or too late for the Sumba flights, plan a night in Bali and count on about 1.5-2 days door to door. Schedules change, so check the airline before booking.

From Bali to Sumba

The last leg is short. Several flights a day connect Bali with Tambolaka in about an hour to an hour and a half, and TransNusa flies non-stop to Waingapu four times a week. Choose Tambolaka for West and Southwest Sumba (the lagoons, western beaches, traditional villages and the Pasola areas) and Waingapu for East Sumba (savanna hills, the east coast and the weaving villages). Many travellers fly into one airport and out of the other. Our guide on how to get to Sumba from Bali covers this leg in detail, and getting around Sumba explains drivers and distances once you land.

Same day or overnight? Sumba departures from Bali have been in the late morning and afternoon (for example 10:35, 14:15 and 15:20 in a 2024 Wings Air schedule). A long-haul flight that lands in Bali in the morning can connect the same day; one that lands in the evening cannot. In practice, a night in Bali is the norm and a sensible buffer against delays.

Total travel time and typical fares

Visas, health and paperwork

Entry rules for Indonesia, including the visa on arrival or e-visa, passport validity and customs declarations, depend on your nationality and change from time to time. Tips for the journey

  • Mind the baggage gap. Long-haul tickets often include 20-30 kg of checked luggage, but the small planes to Sumba are stricter: cabin bags are usually limited to 7 kg, and some Wings Air fares include no free checked bag at all. Prepay extra baggage online for the domestic leg, or leave a bag in Bali.
  • Book a buffer, especially on separate tickets. Your long-haul ticket and the domestic flight are usually separate bookings, so a delay is your problem. A night in Bali in both directions is the safest plan.
  • Choose your hub for comfort. Doha and Dubai split the journey into two similar flights; Istanbul gives you one long non-stop flight; Singapore gives a short last leg and many daily options.
  • Pick the right day. If you want Waingapu, fly from Bali on a Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday or Saturday. For the return, leave Sumba at least the day before your long-haul flight home.
  • Jet lag. Bali and Sumba are on WITA time (UTC+8), 7 hours ahead of Central Europe in winter and 6 in summer. A first quiet day in Bali or near the airport in Sumba helps.
