Australia to Sumba: flights from Perth, Darwin, Sydney and Melbourne via Bali

Sumba is closer to Australia than most people think: fly to Bali, sleep under a frangipani tree if you need to, and the next morning a short flight takes you to an island with almost no crowds at all.

Quick answer

There are no direct flights from Australia to Sumba, so you fly to Bali (Denpasar, DPS) and connect to Tambolaka (TMC) or Waingapu (WGP), about 1 hour 30 minutes. Direct flights to Bali take about 2.5-3 hours from Darwin, 3.5-4 hours from Perth and 6-6.5 hours from Sydney or Melbourne, so the trip takes roughly 7-12 hours airport to airport with a good connection, or a day and a half with a night in Bali. Check the airline before booking because schedules change.

Many Australians know Bali like a second home: the airport queue, the warm night air, the scooters on the bypass. Fewer know that just over an hour further east lies an island where the surf breaks on empty reefs, horses run on the beach at dusk and villages of tall thatched houses still gather for ancestral ceremonies. Sumba is the next step beyond Bali, and for travellers from Perth or Darwin it can be reached in a single day.

The quick answer: fly from Australia to Bali (DPS), then take a domestic flight of about 1 hour 30 minutes to Tambolaka (TMC) in the west or Waingapu (WGP) in the east. From Perth and Darwin, a same-day connection is often possible; from Sydney and Melbourne, most travellers spend a night in Bali. Schedules change, so check the airline before booking.

From each city

Perth

Perth is the easiest Australian gateway. Flights to Bali take about 3.5-4 hours, and Perth is on the same time as Bali and Sumba (UTC+8), so there is no jet lag. HelloRoam reported sale fares of around A$200-350 return in 2026. A morning departure from Perth can land in Bali in time for an afternoon flight to Tambolaka, making Perth to Sumba possible in one day, roughly 7-9 hours airport to airport.

Darwin

Darwin is the closest major city, about 2.5-3 hours from Bali. Fewer airlines fly the route, so seats can sell out in the dry season and school holidays. Darwin is 1.5 hours ahead of Bali, which helps: a morning flight lands in Bali before midday local time, comfortably ahead of the afternoon Sumba departures.

Sydney and Melbourne

From the east coast, Bali is about 6-6.5 hours away, with a wide choice of airlines. Sydney and Melbourne are 2-3 hours ahead of Bali depending on daylight saving. Many flights arrive in Bali in the afternoon or evening, after the last Sumba departures, so plan a night in Bali and fly on the next morning. HelloRoam noted that east coast returns to Bali regularly fall under A$300 in the shoulder season. Total time with an overnight stop is roughly a day and a half.

From Bali to Sumba

Several flights a day link Bali with Tambolaka, and TransNusa flies non-stop to Waingapu four times a week. Choose Tambolaka for West and Southwest Sumba (the lagoons, the western surf coast, the traditional villages and the Pasola areas) and Waingapu for East Sumba (savanna hills, the east coast and the weaving villages). In a 2024 Wings Air schedule the Bali to Tambolaka flights left at 10:35, 14:15 and 15:20. Times change, but the pattern of late-morning and afternoon departures is what makes same-day connections from Perth and Darwin work. Our guide on how to get to Sumba from Bali covers this leg in detail, and getting around Sumba covers drivers and roads.

Fares: one-way direct fares from Bali to Tambolaka were around IDR 1.2-1.4 million for November 2026. For a full trip budget, read Sumba travel costs.

Total travel time

  • Darwin or Perth to Sumba: roughly 7-10 hours airport to airport with a same-day connection in Bali.
  • Sydney or Melbourne to Sumba: roughly 10-12 hours with a tight connection, but usually about a day and a half with a night in Bali.

Visas, health and insurance

Australians need to meet Indonesia's entry rules, which change from time to time. Sumba also has health risks that Bali does not, notably malaria. Read our guide Is Sumba safe? Health, malaria, water, money and phone tips and check Smartraveller before you book. Make sure your travel insurance covers evacuation from Sumba to Bali or Australia.

Tips from the road

  • Surfboards and small planes. Jetstar base fares are carry-on only, and some Wings Air fares to Sumba include no free checked bag, with a 7 kg cabin limit. Boards and big bags must be prepaid and may not fit on the smallest aircraft. Ask the airline before you book, or rent a board in Sumba.
  • Compare the real price. HelloRoam recommends comparing fares with checked bags included: Garuda Indonesia includes bags and meals, while low-cost carriers charge extra.
  • Do not cut it fine. Your Australian flight and your Sumba flight are almost always separate tickets. Leave at least 3 hours in Bali, or stay overnight. On the way home, leave Sumba the day before your flight to Australia.
  • Pick the right day for Waingapu. The TransNusa non-stop flight runs on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. On other days, fly to Tambolaka and drive east (most of a day) or route through Kupang.
  • Avoid the school holiday crush. Bali flights from Australia fill up in Australian school holidays, and Indonesian holidays (late June to mid-July, Christmas, Eid) make the Sumba leg harder to book.
