Londa Lima Beach, Sumba: Waingapu's nearest white-sand beach
White sand, calm water and savanna hills running down to the sea, a short drive from town: an easy swim and a quiet afternoon on Sumba's north coast.
Londa Lima (also called Pantai Kuta, after Kuta village) is a white-sand beach on the north coast of East Sumba, in Kanatang district, roughly 9-15 km north-west of Waingapu: about 20-45 minutes by road. The water is usually calm enough to swim, entry has been reported at a token IDR 2,500 or less, and it is busiest on weekends and holidays.
- Where
- Kuta village, Kanatang district, north coast of East Sumba
- From the nearest airport
- Waingapu (WGP): roughly 30-45 minutes by road
- Best time
- Weekday mornings or late afternoons; dry season for sun
- Entry
- Token fee (around IDR 2,500 in one listing) plus possible parking
- Good for
- An easy swim, a quiet beach afternoon close to town
The road out of Waingapu curls along the coast, and soon the savanna hills come right down to the shore: pale grass, a few big shade trees, cattle wandering on the edge of the sand. Londa Lima is a long curve of white beach with water that shades from clear green near the shore to deep blue further out, where the seabed drops away towards the strait. On a weekday afternoon you might share it with a handful of families and some boys fishing from the rocks, and the only sound is the small, lazy waves.
Londa Lima is the closest proper beach to Waingapu, and a good easy swim between bigger trips.
What it is and why go
Pantai Londa Lima lies in Kuta village, Kanatang district, on the north coast. Locals often call it Pantai Kuta (not to be confused with Bali's Kuta). One source says the name means "holding arms" in the local language, and that the beach opened as a tourist site in 2001 on the village head's initiative. It has white sand, calm water, big shady trees and savanna hills behind; the colour of the water comes from the sloping seabed between Sumba and Flores.

Its appeal is simplicity: an easy, safe-feeling swim, shade under the trees, and views of savanna hills meeting the sea, all within a short drive of your bed in Waingapu. It works well on an arrival afternoon or as a lazy stop on the way back from Puru Kambera or Tanggedu.
It is a local beach first. Families from Waingapu come at weekends and holidays, people fish, and on certain days a Marapu ceremony called hamayang has been reported here. Treat it as a community place, not a resort.
How to get there
Follow the coast road north-west from Waingapu towards Mondu and Puru Kambera. Sources give roughly 9 km and 20 minutes; others describe about 45 minutes on a winding but paved road. Allow 20-45 minutes depending on where you start.
- From Waingapu airport (WGP): roughly 30-45 minutes.
- From Tambolaka (TMC): about 4-5 hours to Waingapu first.
From the beach, a steep road climbs about 5 km inland to the traditional part of Kuta village, with views over the coast and Waingapu.
When to go and best time of day
- Time of day: morning for the calmest water and clearest colours; late afternoon for softer light and a cooler swim.
- Days: weekdays are quiet. Weekends and holidays such as Lebaran are busy with local visitors.
- Season: the dry season (roughly May-November in the east) gives sunny skies and golden hills; the rainy months bring greener hills and the odd storm.
Tips and etiquette
- Fees: one listing gives an entrance fee of IDR 2,500 per person; there may also be a small parking charge. Carry coins and small notes.
- Bring: water, snacks, sunscreen and something for shade. Facilities are basic.
- Swimming: the water is usually calm, but there are no lifeguards. Stay within your depth and watch children closely.
- Dress: swimwear is fine on the beach, but cover up when you walk to the road or the village. Many local women swim fully dressed.
- Ceremonies: if you come across a ritual, keep a respectful distance and do not photograph without permission.
- Rubbish: take it back with you.
